Simulation of Lightning Overvoltages in Electrical Power Systems

Lightning strikes to overhead transmission lines cause travelling waves which propagate along the overhead line and enter substations where they cause overvoltages which can pose a risk to any items of equipment connected, such as cables or transformers. With the use of metal-oxide arresters, these overvoltages are reduced to values which, taking into account an adequate safety margin, are below the electric strength of the electrical devices applied. The paper describes the fundamental relations for calculating lightning overvoltages, the models used for the investigations, and presents as an example the results obtained from a simulation process using the NETOMAC digital simulation program [1].
